Yesterday, the Istanbul Biennial circulated a press release announcing the conceptual framework of its 13th edition, to run from September 14 – November 10, 2013.
Curator Fulya Erdemci – who, as some may recall, was one of the curators of the 2nd Moscow Biennale (worth also remembering that other invited curators included Hans Ulrich Obrist, Nicolas Bourriaud, Rosa Martinez, Iara Boubnova, Daniel Birnbaum and Gunnar B. Kvaran. Not a bad showing, Moscow! And certainly setting the bar for Catherine de Zegher…) – elaborated on her focus, which she identified as “the notion of the public domain as a political forum.”
What better title than to bring this notion to light than: Mom, am I barbarian? The title is borrowed from Lale Müldür, and is supposed to conjure up the idea of “an absolute other.”
Returning to the idea of the public, however, the Biennial has put out a call for applications for artists who would wish to be considered. Submissions will be accepted up until March 1, 2013. For more info, check here.
