After international outpourings of support (from a presentation at the Palais de Tokyo and “in solidarity” party at Le Baron, to an onstage appearance with Faith No More – who apparently still exists) in the wake of yet another extended sentence, on June 29, the Russian court bumped the trial date up, citing the international attention and a wave of letters with over 28,000 signatures protesting how the affair has been handled so far. As the image above suggests, the girls have stirred up something of a circus.
With less than four days before the new hearing, Pussy Riot supporters still scraped together a festival, on the occasion of the preliminary hearing, which was scheduled for today, July 4, at noon. The usual hoopla ensued.
As a result of this hearing, it was determined that the one defendant, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova (yes, the one who always looks like she’s in a perfume ad), has until July 9 to prepare her defense. Her lawyer was quick to point out how inadequate that was a time period to even review the charges against his client. For her part, Tolokonnikova promptly declared a hunger strike. Updates to follow.
